What is Sports Psychology?

Legendary baseball coach Yogi Bera is famously quoted as saying, “the game is 90% mental. The other half is physical.” And I bet that you already know this. To perform at your peak requires focus, commitment, and discipline.  It requires the ability to keep pushing yourself even when you’re tired and even when you don’t want to.  And most of all, it requires the ability to confront challenges and not let those challenges get in your head and affect your game.

Easier said than done.  To be a high performing athlete at any level, the demands on your time, body and mind are intense. Not to mention, you still have the demands of your life outside of sports; whether it’s school, family, a job outside of sports, or a social life.  The life of an athlete is, indeed, one full of challenges.  And sometimes, those challenges feel like they’re too much to bear and they start to impact your performance.

Have you ever thought that you are “in your head” too much, or that you “play scared”? Have you ever had the urge to just hang up your shoes or cleats or swimsuit and just walk away? Do you ever secretly wish for injury so that you wouldn’t have to play anymore? Are you losing sleep thinking about your performance?  Have you made any drastic changes to your diet, thinking it will help you perform better? Are you training through injuries, even though it isn’t safe to do so? These are some signs that maybe it’s time to get some help.
